In the navigation bar you can hit the “tunes” button and find all the music posts all in one place. Genius!
For me the film calendar runs end of Jan (Sundance) to March (Oscars) the following year. This is the window I give myself to try and watch as many films as possible. Every year around March I do two things. I post a list of my fav films from that “year” which oddly this year I haven’t done yet. The second thing I do is put out a mix with some of the best soundtrack scores. It’s important to distinguish score specifically written for a film vs needle drops of existing great music. Every now and then I do deviate from this and a tune or two do make it in when I feel the song is so core to the film’s cinematic experience that it’s more than a “needle drop”.
There’s so much great music to include. For me the film score that most grabbed me the most is the Oscar winning score from Daniel Blumberg for The Brutalist. From the very opening moments the score is like an extra character in the film. Check out his acceptance speech with a nice shout out to Cafe Oto. My tastes don’t usually line up exactly with the winner, my favs are usually nominated but the winner is harder to align.
A number of usual suspects show up in
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross for two different scores, Challengers and Queer. Both Luca Guadagnino films incidentally. His films never disappoint musically.
Alberto Iglesias with another collaboration with Pedro Almodovar.
Hans Zimmer with the Dune Two score. It’s big!
Hildur Gudnadottir with her Joker soundtrack. I confess to not having seen this film yet and probably won’t. But her work is always top top and I went listening to the soundtrack right away.
Other composers on the list are mostly new to me including The Octopus Project for Sasquatch Sunset, Volker Bertelmann for Conclave and a number of others. Camille who collabtorated on the Emilia Perez score is an artist I know of but first time hearing her work in a film score. The songs from that film didn’t grab me as much as the score.
Lastly pay attention to Robert Ouyang Rusli a NY composer/artist who scored the A24 indie film Problemista. His work is undefinable. I tried to work with him on a project a couple years back but schedules didn’t align and I’m pretty sure it’s this film he decided to do instead.
The full list of films featured include:
The Brutalist, Challengers, The Room Next Door, Problemista, Sasquatch Sunset, The Last Showgirl, Conclave, Nosferatu, Dune Part Two, Joker Folie a Deux, Evil does not exist, Queer, and Emilia Perez.
Click to listen to the mix in a new window that will pop up. Let me know what you think.

If soundtracks are your thing then you can find all my soundtrack focused mixes here on Mixcloud including past yearly round ups like this one from 2023. For the films I’ve produced I’ve also made mixes of the music, you can find the soundtrack for Clemency here and for Bring Your Own Brigade here.
Figured I’d keep this little blurb from post #1 here as well to help explain things!
I’m figuring out the format of how I share the mixes. I use Mixcloud because they pay royalties to the artists just like a radio station does and there are no copyright takedowns.
I did some research on this. There’s no native way for me to share the mix here. So you see the image above, click it and it’ll send you to the mixcloud platform where you can listen. I wish there was a way to listen to it directly in the post but alas, maybe in the future. Or if you know a better way, please share in the comments.
Also excited to share a film I produced about the LA punk/rock/pop band Redd Kross is available to rent exclusively on reddkrossfilm.com Please come and check it out. It continues it’s theatrical run in April in a few places with more to be announced.
