Confesion. I have a significant musical obsession.
If I had the lifestyle where I could drop into a live show 5 nights a week I would.
I’m the kind of person who isn’t distracted by music when I’m working, in fact it focuses me. I’ve shared music with other people most of my life starting out with mixtapes (on cassettes) to DJing in bars, restaurants, and clubs. For the last 15 years+ I’ve put out a fairly regular weekly podcast under the name playjazzloud and I’m bringing it here to Substack. Don’t let the name pigeonhole me, it goes way beyond jazz. Stick around and find out.
For the first Atelier Format Jukebox Session here I’m diving into the vaults to pull out a blend of soundtrack music. I lean towards jazz, soul, funk, folk, world and classical when it comes to soundtracks. This session features music from John Barry, Nino Rota, Henry Mancini, Luiz Bonfa, Manu Dibango and many more. I’m figuring out the format of how I share the mixes. I use Mixcloud because they pay royalties to the artists just like a radio station does and there are no copyright takedowns.
I did some research on this. There’s no native way for me to share the mix here. So you see the image below, click it and it’ll send you to the mixcloud platform where you can listen. I wish there was a way to listen to it directly in the post but alas, maybe in the future. Or if you know a better way, please share in the comments.
So once a week you’ll find my musical selection going out on Wednesdays.
Here is the tracklist for the mix and the films the music comes from. Generally when I do soundtrack mixes I try to focus on music created specifically for the film vs needle drops that land in the film. Though sometimes I do stray from that!
